Best NFA>GDTRFB>NFA? An outstanding one for sure, especially given that Bobby breaks three strings. However I think this one is a warm-up for the following week in Austin. To me 11-15-71 is by far and away the best NFA>GDTRFB>NFA that I have ever heard. Love the china cat tease in the jam. Bobby starts it and Jerry picks it up and runs with it. A great demonstration of how in tune these guys could be with each other and the moment.

elbow, the jam that follows china cat on 11/15 has got to be some of the craziest, jazziest NFA jamming ever! weird shit

I think that is why it is my favorite one. I agree with LiA that the Jerry solo in 10-31-71 can't be beat and i couldn't fault anyone for saying it is their favorite. I just think the jamming in this one is so much more interesting.

(btw am i the only who now hears the robot voice from Cliff's movies whenever i type the date of a grateful dead show?)

I think I may like 10/31/71 best of all?

But to borrow a phrase from LIA, there are probably twenty top-ten performances of NFA> GDTRFB> NFA...

Yes, very hard to choose a top version from '71 with so many outstanding renditions to choose from. 10/31 has always been one of my favorites, but this one is no slouch of course.

I think 10/31/71 is my favorite, along with 11/15/71. 11/15 for obvious reasons; but Jerry's soloing in 10/31 is just unmatched - 11/7 is pretty similar but, to me, not quite as good.

Fall '71 was the best time for this combo - it improved immensely from spring '71 (when they didn't jam out NFA very much). And by '72, strangely enough, NFAs did not usually get the big-jam treatment as much as they had before. (Although I have an especial soft spot for 11/24/72, which is the best version of this combo from '72...aside from 7/16 and 8/22, which have Hey Bo Diddley added.)

one of the jammiest NFA's of '72 i can think of (which i can guess you're well aware of too) is the spectacular version from the legendary 5/26 show. not ultra-long or anything but tons of stuff to get your behind movin'. i especially like how jerry and keith really lock in on this one particularly nasty riff around 4:00 or so...it's sweet!
